Song Lifecycle

Owner: Song Selector + Director + Worship Lead

Stages

  1. Scout — heard/suggested; theological & congregational fit review (Song Selector)
  2. Trial — introduced with clear teach moments
  3. Core — known by the room; appears in regular rotation
  4. Rest — intentionally shelved to keep the diet fresh
  5. Archive — retained for special use, not active weekly

Role split

Stage work Primary
What enters the diet / which titles this week Song Selector (Director covers)
Can we arrange and rehearse it well Worship Lead
Can media/tech support it Media / Tech Lead
Keep / rework / rest after outings Song Selector + Worship Lead + Director

Intake criteria (discussion starters)

  • Compliance with all six core criteria in Song Selection Policy: biblically defensible theology, corporate-worship intent, congregational ownership and singability, clear Christian confession, and pastoral usefulness
  • Compliance with the policy's content boundaries and 50-title rolling ceiling
  • Band/tech complexity vs available volunteers
  • Overlap with songs already in rotation
  • Pastoral season fit

Introducing a new song

  • Name what repertoire function the song adds and record it in the annual register
  • Teach strategy agreed (call-and-response, melody first, etc.) — Song Selector + Worship Lead
  • Charts + lyrics deck ready before first full-band week — Worship Lead + Media
  • Plan approximately three outings within six to eight weeks; repeat the following week when suitable
  • Evaluate after 2–3 outings: keep, rework, or rest
