FOH Engineer

Owner: Tech Lead

Purpose

Create a clear, comfortable congregational mix that prioritizes vocals and the lyric — so the room can sing.

Owns

  • House mix for the service
  • System alignment checks within published SOP
  • Coordinating with Worship Lead on dynamic shape
  • Protecting the room from damaging levels

Attendance

  • Prior group rehearsal required when scheduled for that service (same bar as band) — see Rehearsal Standards

Pre-service / rehearsal

  • Walk system: mains, subs, fills as applicable
  • Load correct show file / snapshot plan
  • Line check with stage
  • Gain structure sane before effects
  • Talk to Worship Lead about sparse vs full moments
  • At midweek: build mix against the real band, not only a line check

Mix priorities (default)

  1. Spoken word — the pastor’s mic is intelligible first, always
  2. Lead vocal intelligibility
  3. Groove (kick/snare/bass relationship)
  4. Supporting vocals
  5. Harmony instruments
  6. Sparkle / FX

During service

  • Stop changing things at freeze (default: doors) unless safety or failure
  • Anticipate transitions; don’t chase every peak with the same aggression
  • Keep a written or mental note list for debrief
  • If something is truly broken, communicate to stage/Worship Lead calmly

Post

  • Save show file if changed intentionally
  • Note unexplained noises / ghost signals for the Tech Lead
  • Power-down per strike checklist
