Lighting Operator

Owner: Tech Lead

Purpose

Support focus, mood, and congregation comfort without turning the platform into a concert that excludes the room.

Owns

  • Cue list aligned to order of service
  • Safe levels — strobes and seizure-risk effects are off by default; only with the Director’s approval and a photosensitivity note on the plan (your church’s rule in Our Congregation)
  • Stage wash sufficient for cameras and real faces
  • Knowing blackout and restore (grand master / bump) without looking

Attendance

  • Prior group rehearsal required when scheduled for that service — see Rehearsal Standards
  • Prefer running key cues against the set at midweek when the weekend is cue-heavy

Defaults

  • Bright enough for people to feel invited to sing
  • Dynamic for full-band moments; prayer / word = static warm wash, no movement
  • Avoid cue spam that distracts from the lyric
  • Volunteers do not climb, fly, or rewire fixtures

Pre-service

  • Patch / universe OK
  • Cue stack matches plan
  • Blackout and restore (grand master / bump) ready for unplanned moments
  • Hands off at freeze unless safety/failure
